Diageo-owned vodka marque Smirnoff created quite a buzz in America recently after releasing a somewhat controversial advertisement campaign with a message striking against President of the United States (POTUS) Donald Trump.
The ad has become a winner amongst many Americans on social media who applaud Smirnoff for its rather smart political potshot at the President. The billboard ad that’s being placed across America reads: “Made in America, but we’d be happy to talk about our ties to Russia under oath.”
The message sees Smirnoff referring to the controversial President’s status of being under investigation by a special committee and the FBI regarding his campaign’s connections with Russia, following the sacking of FBI director James Comey.
The President has been accused of obstructing justice by allegedly pressuring Comey to stop the investigation into communications between key Trump aides and Russian intelligence officials.
Trump pledges to testify under oath about a special prosecutor’s probe into accusations that Russian officials meddled in the 2016 election to help Trump win. However, this remains to be seen.
Politics aside, there is some truth to Smirnoff’s Russian ties. Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov founded the brand in 1860s in Moscow before where it became the Tsar’s vodka supplier in 1886. The communist revolution prompted the Smirnov family to flee Russia into Europe, thus shifting both its family and brand name’s spelling to ‘Smirnoff’ too.
The Smirnoff vodka brand changed hands several times since before coming into the steady hands of UK distilling giant Diageo in 1997. Today, much of the brand’s vodka sold in the US is made domestically, the majority of which being made at Diageo’s massive facility in Plainfield, Illinois, USA.
