One of the rarest and most expensive whisky sets from makers The Macallan is slated to go under the hammer in Hong Kong next month with auction house Bonhams. Known as The Macallan Six Pillars Collection, this special set is expected to fetch anywhere between US$461,000 and US$589,000.
The Macallan Six Pillars Collection is comprised of six decanters made exclusively by French crystal house Lalique, which contains rare Macallan whiskies aged – in order of release – for 50, 55, 57, 60, 62, and 65 years.
Bonhams Hong Kong’s whisky specialist Daniel Lam says that individual bottles from this collection are amongst the most sought after and highest performing whiskies at auction. He adds, “This is a wonderful and rare opportunity for collectors to acquire such a desirable set in its entirety.”
Earlier this year, a similar collection dubbed The Macallan in Lalique Legacy Collection sold at auction by rivals Sotheby’s Hong Kong for a record-breaking sum of US$993,000 – roughly twice that of this new collection’s expected figure.
Besides The Macallan Six Pillars Collection set, the Bonhams Hong Kong’s August auction bill also feature a single Macallan Millennium Decanter (estimated at US$27,000 to US$32,000) and a vertical series of The Macallan – 40 bottles distilled between 1958 and 1997 (estimated at US$77,000 to US$100,000).
