If you’ve gone through our list of essential whisky cocktails prior, you’d probably sipped a few scotch-specific Rob Roys and John Collins already. Now, you’re probably wondering what next, right? Worry not as we’ve done some homework and here’s our list another 5 scotch whisky cocktails to know and try.

For this list, we’re putting specific focus on everyone’s favourite whisky type – scotch. As we’ve said before, there’s no harm in using your favourite single malt offering here, but always take the time to enjoy it neat first before you go on mixing it. To be safe, stick to any blended malt offering of good strength.

Now, here’s five more scotch whisky cocktails you ought to know beyond the Rob Roy and John Collins.

1. Penicillin
This surprisingly refreshing brew is the brainchild of famed New York-based bartender Sam Ross that many have said is great to wind down with after a long day.

You’ll need 2 ounces of blended scotch whisky(recommended: Dewar’s White Label), 1/4 ounce of Islay single malt scotch (recommended: Laphroaig), 3/4 ounces of fresh lemon juice, 3/4 ounces of honey syrup, and 3 slices of ginger.

Muddle the ginger first until its well mashed before adding the blended malt scotch, lemon juice and honey syrup, then shaking it well in some ice until chilled. Strain and fill into an ice-filled glass before pouring the single malt and let it float on top.

2. Blood and Sand
Scotch is a notoriously difficult drink to mix with, but the Blood and Sand mix arguably maximises its affects greatly. Best of all, this is one simple and straightforward drink to make too.

You’ll need 1 ounce of blended malt scotch(recommended: The Famous Grouse), 1 ounce of freshly-squeezed orange juice, 3/4 ounce of sweet vermouth, as well as 3/4 ounce of sweet cherries.

Simply pour all the liquid ingredients and shake it well with ice in a shaker for about 10 seconds before straining it into a chilled cocktail glass. Lastly, garnish it with the all-important cherries for a sweet ending.

3. Rusty Nail
The Rusty Nail is perhaps one of the most underrated classics there is as far as scotch whisky cocktails go. The original recipe calls for equal parts of scotch to Drambuie, but the modern day recipe instead calls for 1/2 ounce of Drambuie and a dash of bitters.

Simply pour 2 ounces of your preferred scotch (recommended: Ballantine’s) into an ice-filled glass, 1/2 ounce of Drambuie and a dash of bitters (i.e. Angostura or Campari), then stir it thoroughly before sipping.

4. Whisky Royale
Want something a little more posh? How about an infusion of scotch, apple schnapps (or juice) and slices, ginger ale and crushed ice in a champagne flute? The Whisky Royale could be what you need in your hand at the next fancy ball you attend.

This serving we found on scotch-whisky.org.uk starts by filling half a champagne flute with crushed ice first. Then, add the scotch of choice (recommended: Johnnie Walker Green Label) and the apple schnapps (or fresh apple juice) before topping it up with ginger ale and placing a slice of apple (green or red) for garnish.

5. Scotch Paradise
Now, if you thought you couldn’t get a proper tropical twist to scotch, then you clearly haven’t heard of the Scotch Paradise. This coconut-infused mix we found on scotch-whisky.org.uk sounds perfect for us here living close to the equator line.

 

JW_Blenders' Batch_Bourbon_Cask_Rye_Finish

 

This mix requires 50ml of scotch (recommended: Johnnie Walker Blenders’ Batch perhaps?), sugar syrup, coconut shreds, a dash of coconut syrup and milk. Start by moistening the edge of a highball glass with sugar syrup and coating it with coconut shreds.

Next, shake the scotch and coconut syrup well in a shaker with ice and enough milk to fill a glass. Then, pour the shaken mix into the syrup and coconut-rimmed glass, and enjoy this sweet sensation.
